The Importance of Ground Attendants

Flight attendants are some of the first people that come to mind when we think about flights and airlines. But what about those not on our flights? Let’s talk about ground attendants.

Ground attendants, also known as ground staff, are those that support the airline from the ground, from within the airport. Both ground and flight attendants earn around the same amount a month: the entry level monthly salary for this job can range from P16,800 to P26,000. For those that work in the U.S. or Canada, their salary ranges from $3,612 a month. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is projected that there will be a 13% growth in employment from 2021 to 2022.

A passenger’s travels actually begin with ground attendants and getting on flights will be pretty chaotic without them. Aside from providing assistance when asked, their duties are pretty different from those of flight attendants.

In and out

Other than the security guards, they’re one of the first faces we see when we go into an airport. After all, before getting on that flight, there are some things that need to be taken care of, such as checking in, verifying identification, and checking travel documents– and they’re in charge of doing all of that for us.

Working at both arrival and departure gates, they are tasked to verify the passenger count by providing a list of all the checked-in passengers, check our tickets, and announce boarding sections. They even have to respond to telephone inquiries about flight departure and arrival information along with taking reservations.

Roaming the premises

Aside from the assistance they provide behind the desk, ground staff also roam the terminal, assisting anybody with questions or anyone that asks for help, whether it be about flight seats or concerns with where specific terminals are.

Along with ensuring the safety and security of passengers’ luggage, ground staff also have to conduct security screenings. During these screenings, they may have to check the luggage as well.

Just like flight attendants, ground staff work towards providing a safe and comfortable environment for their passengers. Their role in an airline is just as essential as anyone else working in it, and they are just as in-demand, too.
