Not All Flight Attendant Schools Are Created Equal. Here’s How to Choose the Best One

Today’s tourism industry is booming. In fact, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, in terms of volume, the tourism business surpasses top businesses like oil exports, food products, and automobiles. Travel has become more accessible and more countries are benefitting from the continuous growth in tourism arrivals.

With tourism in full blast, more people are getting jobs related to the industry. There’s an increasing demand for commercial aircrafts, pilots, and above all, flight attendants.

So let’s say you want to be a flight attendant and take advantage of one of the biggest and most lucrative industry today. Great! But how?

First, ask yourself what type of program you want to take. Do you want to take a crash course or a degree program? Some airlines prefer applicants with backgrounds on customer service and excellent communication skills so it’s best to go for courses related to communications or tourism and hospitality.

Next, look at the curriculum. According to Education Portal, one of the most important considerations in choosing a flight attendant school is the program’s curriculum. It’s important that a school has courses that provide an overview of the travel industry, professional development, as well as interpersonal communication. Look for schools with modules or courses that will broaden your knowledge about the industry as well as teach you the necessary skills to carry out your duties as a cabin crew member efficiently and effectively. It’s also important to consider if the tuition for your chosen course or program translates well to the classes offered. Better to spend more on a comprehensive curriculum than less with insufficient opportunities to learn.

Take note of the school’s requirements and prerequisites. Some schools accept college graduates of who are interested in a crash course or getting a second degree, whether that previous degree is related to tourism or not. Found a school that grabbed your attention? Ask—are theyopen to high school graduates and degree holders looking to expand their knowledge base? Do they set a specific age and height limit? Do you need a few basic skill set like English proficiency or swimming capabilities before applying?

Lastly, check to see if the school has any connections with top airlines. If so, is it successful in getting flight attendant jobs for its graduates? Having adequate training is one thing but landing a job is a completely different matter.

Remember that being a member of the cabin crew entails a lot of responsibility since the safety and well-being of the flight passengers lies with you. As such, you will need training from a school which is a recognized leader in its field and certified by the government.

It’s important that before deciding on a school, you make sure that its programs are duly recognized and approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), Technical Education Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
