Dreaming of becoming a pilot? Then why not fulfill your dream in the Philippines? The Philippines belongs to one of the gems in Asia when it comes to aviation industry. Recently upgraded to Category 1 by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Philippines meets the international safety standards set by the United Nation’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Many international airlines have been eyeing Filipino pilots when looking for professional and high-quality pilots.
Don’t believe us yet? We’re hoping these reasons will convince you that the Philippines is the ideal place to take your dreams to flight:
If there’s one quality that Filipinos surely have, it’s our relentless dedication to our jobs—a trait that is evident in our Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). Despite the culture shock and language barrier – not to mention, the pain of being away from their families, Filipinos persist in finding a good job overseas to give a better life to their family back home.
Studying in a Philippine pilot school will expose you to serious students who commit to their profession. In fact, it’s the very thing that airline companies look for in a pilot, said Capt. Benedict Lopena, the head training for WCC Aviation’s Pilot Academy.
Having hard working instructors and classmates is surely the best training environment that will inspire you forward to your dreams.
It’s widely known that Filipinos are generally good in English. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) Flight Service Inspectorate Service (FSIS) head, Captain Beda Badiola, even expressed that “we are ahead of some Asian countries because Filipinos understand and are proficient in English language.”
Studying in the Philippines as a pilot not only trains you to be competent in the field, but also exposes you to the “universal language”, the vernacular used by almost every pilot anywhere in the world. If you think about it, that’s hitting two birds in one stone!
The Philippines prides itself in having the longest timeline in the aviation industry.
While other countries in Southeast Asia were still struggling to gain their independence in 1937, the Philippines has already built Nielson Airport, the biggest and best-equipped airport in Asia during that time.
The Nielson Airport then became the base of the American Far Eastern School of Aviation, the first flight school in Asia. The school produced most, if not all, other pilots for airline companies in other countries and other aviation schools.
This deeply-rooted inclination of Filipinos to excel in aviation continues up to this day.
In October 2014, Capt. Franklin Mallari Desiderio’s impressive performance caught the interest of foreign airline companies as he successfully flew the world’s largest passenger aircraft, Airbus A380, from Dubai to Manila. Airbus A380, which Desiderio fondly calls the “Gentle Giant”, is a double decker jumbo jet that has a capacity of about 500 passengers.
“There’s so much skepticism that Manila cannot accept the A380 into this airport. By doing this flight, on the approach, on the runway, on the landing and taxiway, I would say that Manila is capable,” said Capt. Desiderio said in an interview. Desiderio is just one of the hundreds of Filipino pilots who have shown exceptional performance in the aviation industry.
According to CAAP, in January 2015 alone there are hundreds Filipino new pilots being recruited overseas to fly foreign aircrafts. Additionally, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers’ Association (LPGMA) party-list representative, Arnel Ty, mentioned that there would be a worldwide demand of about 465,000 pilots and about 601,000 aircraft maintenance in the coming years until 2031. Now that’s a promising future for Filipino pilots!
Having a rich aviation history with a strong command of the international language, the Philippines has one of the biggest advantages in the global pilot job market.
So if you dream of landing in a prestigious job with an impressive salary and a promising position in the international market—whether you’re true-blue Filipino or not—Philippine aviation schools are waiting to help you realize your dreams.
