How To Be A Commercial Pilot and How Long Does it take?

First of all, what comprises a commercial pilot’s job?

Commercial pilots are responsible and authorized to fly aircraft for various purposes. They have fixed schedule flights, they can fly charter flights, crop dusters, emergency planes, and join rescue operations. Besides flying the aircraft, commercial pilots need constant communication with air traffic control.

To become a Commercial Pilot, the candidate must obtain a Commercial Pilot License (CPL). Achieving this requires a lot of rigorous training to build proficiency, competence, and skills in handling aircraft.

Here’s an overview of the steps on how to be a commercial pilot:

First Step

An applicant must be 18 years old and above; can communicate effectively, and must pass the physical exam and vision test. Also, the applicant must obtain a license and certificate from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and pass the Aviation Training Organization (ATO) requirements to have a certificate.

Requirements to Obtain PPL

You need basic and other required flying experiences to pursue a Commercial Pilot License (CPL). First you must obtain a Private Pilot License (PPL). Private Pilot training requires:

● Fluency in English, oral and written

● Hold at least a current 3rd Class Medical Certificate

● Pass the ATO Knowledge (General) Test

● Pass the ATO Practical Flight Test and Oral Examination (Checkride)

CPL Training

After the basic steps, a Commercial Pilot License (CPL) has entry training requirements to build and improve the trainee’s skill and efficiency on the field. The minimum number of hours of CPL flight training is 110 hours, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). Then another 40 hours of widespread training as Private Pilot are needed, for a total of 150 hours.

● English Language Proficiency (ELP) Test (Level 4 minimum);
● Valid Radiotelephony License (RT);

● At least 18 years old;

● Special Study Permit (SSP) for foreign students

● Duration: 10-12 Months (Fast-Track)

Additional Certificate

To become an officially licensed pilot, commercial pilots must pass the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) practical test, which is administered by a registered official.The examiners/candidates will perform a variety of operational tasks, demonstrate their ability to meet industry standards and exhibit proficiency in flying, and must pass a written exam to demonstrate their knowledge of navigation, safety, and regulations.

The commercial pilot needs to become licensed as an airline transport pilot in order to work for commercial airlines. The commercial pilot must be at least 23 years old, have a minimum of 1,500 hours of flight experience, and pass FAA examinations.
