Bread and Pastry Training Program Held to Empower Women, Youth in Caloocan City

WCC Aeronautical & Technological College (WCC ATC) North Manila in collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) conducted a community-based training program on bread and pastry production as one of the exemplary initiative of the institutions to empower women and youth. This program not only aims to enhance practical skills but also fosters continuous development and learning, self-confidence, entrepreneurship, and sustainable livelihoods among participants. The beneficiaries of the participants were community members, women and out-of-school youth of Barangay 96 in Caloocan City, which is an adopted barangay of WCC ATC North Manila adopted barangay, and women personnel of the institution.

The program is designed to provide women and youth with essential skills in baking and pastry making, which are not only valuable for personal development but also for economic empowerment. By focusing on a practical trade, participants were equipped with the ability to generate income and contribute to their households and communities. The training included a comprehensive curriculum that covered the fundamentals of baking, including ingredient selection, dough preparation, baking techniques, and presentation skills. Participants learned to create a wide variety of bread and pastries, from simple loaves to intricate desserts, thereby expanding their culinary repertoire.

One of the key aspects of this initiative was its community-based approach. By bringing the training to local communities, WCC ATC North Manila and TESDA had made accessible to those who may face barriers to traditional education and vocational training. The program was tailored to meet the specific needs of the community, taking into account local tastes and preferences while also introducing participants to global baking trends. This localized approach not only enhances the relevance of the training but also encourages community engagement and support, fostering a sense of ownership among participants.

Moreover, the initiative emphasized the importance of mentorship and peer support. Experienced trainers from WCC ATC North Manila, alongside local bakers, provided hands-on guidance and shared their expertise with participants. This mentorship model created an environment where learners can ask questions, seek advice, and receive constructive feedback. It also facilitated networking opportunities, allowing participants to connect with industry professionals and potential employers. By building these relationships, the program enhanced participants' confidence and prepares them for future career paths, whether as entrepreneurs or employees in the hospitality industry.

An essential component of the program was its focus on entrepreneurship. Participants were not only taught how to bake but also how to create a business plan, manage finances, and market their products. This holistic approach empowered participants to envision starting their own baking businesses, whether as a home-based operation or a small storefront. The program encouraged them to identify their unique selling propositions, enabling them to carve out a niche in the local market. Additionally, the training included practical sessions on food safety, hygiene, and quality control, ensuring that participants understand the importance of maintaining high standards in their baking endeavors.

The impact of the program extended beyond individual participants. By empowering women and youth to acquire skills that can lead to self-employment, the initiative contributed to community development and economic growth. As participants start their own businesses, they create job opportunities for others, thereby stimulating local economies. Moreover, the production of baked goods can enhance food security within the community, promoting healthier eating habits and greater access to affordable, nutritious food.

The program also played a vital role in challenging traditional gender roles within the community. By actively involving women in bread and pastry production, it helps to break down stereotypes that associate certain professions with specific genders. This shift in perception is crucial in promoting gender equality and ensuring that women have equal opportunities to participate in economic activities. Furthermore, the inclusion of youth in the program fosters a sense of responsibility and agency among the younger generation, encouraging them to take an active role in their communities.

Success stories from the program have begun to emerge, highlighting the transformative power of skill development. Many participants have reported increased self-esteem and a newfound passion for baking, which has translated into successful business ventures. These successes serve as inspiration for others in the community, creating a ripple effect that encourages more individuals, especially women and youth, to pursue their own entrepreneurial aspirations.
